You can’t prepare for some things

On Friday, I wrote that when good fortune comes your way it might be a good idea to not blow it all at once, so there will be some left when a rainy day comes and you could really use it.

But, a scary happened this weekend that reminded me that there are things you can’t always plan for, and which you usually figure will never happen to you.

My kids were riding their bikes with a neighborhood friend. They asked if they could go across the street to ride around near her house, and we told them they could, but they must stay on the sidewalk and the drive, and not go into the street. My wife and I were doing some yard work where we could watch them and check up on them. We were talking and glancing over at the kids riding bikes every minute or two. All-of-a-sudden I saw a car slam on its brakes and swerve slightly. As I looked, I saw that my (4 1/2 year old) son had come down the hill of the drive, couldn’t stop and was zooming across the street right in front of the car.

My wife and I went running to grab him as his front tire crashed into the curb on our side of the street. The car stopped about 4 or 5 feet from him.

Thanks be to God that he was not hit and for the driver being alert and seeing him in enough time to stop.

My son was ok, and I’m sure the driver was shaken up, as he rolled down the window and talked to us to make sure my son was ok.

After calming my son down (not to mention my wife), I went back to yard work. I was thinking about the blog post I wrote on Friday, and how there are some bad things that you could never be prepared for.

I couldn’t imagine how our lives would have been changed in that instant.
