Gas Price Watch: Day 22

Ten days ago, gas prices in the Chicago suburbs was $3.499 for 87 octane unleaded. On May 3rd, prices were $3.259 per gallon. A jump of 45 cents a gallon in about 20 days.

Two days ago, prices jumped again to $3.659. How’s that “Gas Out” thing supposed to work again? Yeah, that’s right … it is a myth that such things can have an effect on prices.

Chicago gasoline prices are now the highest in the nation, even surpassing California prices which are typically the highest in the country. And, with the Memorial Day weekend coming up, one can expect the prices to jump even more.

The cause of this is said to be due, in part, to high oil prices. However, prices are down nearly $10 a barrel compared to one year ago. Point that out and they say, “oh well, demand is up”. Then, they say that gasoline supplies are down.

Problem: They are responsible for the supplies being down because they are doing maintenance at one of the worst times of the year.

And this is how they control what you pay at the pump.
