Movies: Can we bring the kids?
There are a lot of times that I’ve heard the question asked “do you think that movie would be ok for my kids to see?”
It’s sometimes a tough question to answer because of the different parental styles, permissions, morals, etc For my own kids — ages 6 and 4 –there is much that we won’t allow them to see. So, if I were to ask other people, they might say “it’s fine”. As a result, we typically only take our kids to “G” rated movies. It can be perplexing to find a good answer that fits you.
Now there is a website, kids-in-mind.com, that can help you weed through content without having to first sit through the movie to determine if its appropriate for your kids — or even you and your spouse.
The site describes itself as follows, in part:
We enable adults to determine whether a movie is appropriate for them or their children, according to their own criteria. Unlike the MPAA we do not assign an inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE & PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10. We also explain in detail why a film rates high or low in a specific category, and we include instances of SUBSTANCE USE, a list of DISCUSSION TOPICS that may elicit questions from kids and MESSAGES the film conveys.
Definitely seems like a good reference to consult before deciding whether to view the film or not.
