Gasoline Price Watch: Day 12

In our last episode, on May 3rd, we found local (Chicago suburbs) gas prices $3.259 (for 87 octane).

This morning, prices were 3.299 per gallon. However, the same station this afternoon was $3.499 per gallon.

So, for those taking tally, that is $0.75 per gallon increase since just before the start of May.

This year’s Gas Out is tomorrow. I have a feeling that stations have raised prices ahead of this “boycott” in order to capitalize on those wanting to participate. My guess is that prices will drop on May 15th back to the prices we’ve seen in the past weeks, just so people can think they were successful. If it does drop, it will actually be proof that planned, single-day boycotts don’t work and actually could force higher prices.

Glad I filled my tanks at 3.199 on Saturday at a different station (BP) than the one cited above.
