Forget sexyback, bring judgmentback
I think its time we bring some judgment back into the world. All this political correctness and “tolerance” (not that tolerance seems to really exists “in the wild”) is not good for us.
For instance, the recent reports on abstinence-only education as a failure (although, perhaps you may want to take a look at a different perspective, here). And, it is reported that almost all have sex before marriage. So, they say that its a failure and government should abandon the program.
I’m too young to remember the so-called “prudish” days of the 40s and 50s and earlier, but it seemed that even as I was growing up there was a certain expectation on behavior, manners and respect. That’s gotten decidedly worse as the years have gone by.
By the same token, shouldn’t we stop teaching tolerance and political correctness? Seems to me that things were better when we actually expected things of people — particularly integrity; mean what you say.
Men were expected to hold a door for a woman; and women were expected to accept it, not scream about how offensive or demeaning it was as they were capable of opening their own door. Children were expected to learn, get good grades, respect adults; not smart off, talk back, belittle and demean their parents, etc. A gift received carried with it the obligation to return the courtesy with a ‘thank you’.
When you didn’t do what was expected, there were consequences and people looked down on you. Your actions reflected on your upbringing and your family.
As I said, maybe its time we bring back some of that judgment. Maybe then more people would know where their kids were; more would know who their kids were; more people would cope in the real world; and more people would give and show respect because it was the measure of their worth in society.
