A little background before I begin…
I have spent a fair amount of time — approximately the last 10 years — answering objections of Protestants and anti-Catholics (not necessarily the same), and even non-Christians and athiests, to Catholic doctrine and practice. In the earlier days, I would sometimes spend 8, 10 and even 12 hours a day going between different websites, reading and posting replies, particularly to those who misrepresented or did not understand Catholic doctrine.
In that time, I’ve discovered things that work, and much of what doesn’t. Oftentimes, I would have very similar conversations on the same topics, and post many of the same things. Over time, I gathered some of my conversations together into an article form and posted them on the web.
CatholicSphere is an out-growth of those efforts.
However, during the 2004 election (and a bit before) I found myself concentrated on correcting all the misinformation out there from Catholic politicians (you know … those who put on their Catholic hat when it served them, but put it in their pocket when it really mattered).
I’ve spent more time in the past 3 years talking about that, and other public expressions of faith, than I have talking about the anti-Catholics; or explaining Catholic doctrine and teaching.
I want to change that, though. And, kind of ease back into that.
My plan is to work up a series called “Anti-anti-Catholicism 101″. This will focus on addressing the charges made by anti-Catholics (and Protestants) against their caricature of Catholic doctrine. It will point to credible sources around the web, and also speak to the proper approach and demeanor one should take when refuting the erroneous claims.
So, check-in regularly … add your own thoughts and success stories in the comboxes … learn, and share what you’ve learned…
