I came across the most recent column of Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, thanks to the the mention and commentary on it by Amy Welborn over at Open Book.
There are many good people whose path to holiness is shaped by religious individualism and private interpretation of what God has revealed. They are, however, called Protestants.
Bravo, Cardinal George!
The wider point of the column is that many Catholics need to embrace the faith and be, as Cardinal George said, “authentically Catholic”. There is a tendency to be … well … Protestant in the way we approach the faith. This is most clearly witnessed in the way we approach Mass and the Eucharist (if we approach them at all). Many Catholics think “I don’t need the Church”. Cardinal George seems to be saying “then you’re not Catholic”.
Thanks to Bettnet for pointing out this vlog that shows what troops are doing on a day to day basis, in Iraq. Quite eye-opening, and quite a different view than what you might get on the local evening news.
Cardinal Kasper is saying that many Christians are still in need of “milk” instead of “solid food” .
“How can you speak, for example, of justification by faith if there is no longer an awareness of God and of sin, an awareness that there is a need for forgiveness and redemption,” the cardinal said at a Jan. 23 Vatican press conference.
That might go hand in hand with what Cardinal George talks about above.
And, there is some good news from a recent CBS News Poll about abortion. We have a majority! More than half of all people polled wanted abortion to be illegal or extremely restricted. Still, 31 percent want abortion on demand … that is, at anytime, for any reason.
I hate the fact that 31 percent of people polled were also found to be stupid.
