Mary, Mother of God

Today, January 1st, is a Feast Day in our Church. It is the Feast of Mary, Mother of God.

Marcellino D’Ambrosio, Ph.D. has an article on Catholic Exchange that explains what this means, especially because, as Dr. D’Ambrosio points out “call her ‘the Mother of God’ and you’ll see some Christians squirm.”

It was in the 5th Century when heresy crept in and a preacher named Nestorius first proclaimed that, while she was indeed the “God-bearer” (Theotokos), it was improper to call her “Mother of God”. This sparked a controversy that was later resolved by the affirmation that the person of Jesus Christ was fully God and fully man, in one person, such that Him Who Mary gave birth to was indeed born as human and divine - such that it was impossible for her to give birth to only his “human side”.

If you are uncomfortable with the title “Mother of God” describing Mary and affirming who Jesus really is, take the time to read this article.

I welcome your thoughts and comments on the article.
