Were Was the Catholic Vote This Last Election?

OpinionEditorials.com – Were Was the Catholic Vote This Last Election? - Roeten

Caught this piece as I was Google-ing for Catholic news.

There are many parts of it that I totally agree with. Particularly the citations of Canon Law, the words of Pope Benedict and the Bishops …

However, I can’t really accept the conclusion. The commentary lacks mention of the number of pro-life Democrats that were running for office this election. In fact, in many races, these are the Democrats that won.

It seems unfortunate that most equate faithful Christianity with the Republican party. The problem with this approach is that neither party is supportive of Christianity, even Catholicism. Long gone are the days when Catholic and Democrat went hand in hand.

Certainly voting for those who support abortion, stem-cell research, same-sex marriage, euthanasia, etc is a grave matter. These issues matter. But, the thing to keep in mind on these issues also is that politicians need to actually do something on these matters. Incumbents who have done nothing on these issues need to be seriously checked in their re-election campaigns.

We must send a message that it takes more than lip service to get our votes.
