“Hateful Lemmings”

Elton John:  Ban Religion

“Organized religion doesn’t seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it’s not really compassionate. The world is near escalating to World War Three and where are the leaders of each religion?

“Why aren’t they having a conclave? Why aren’t they coming together? I said this after 9/11 and people thought I was nuts. Instead of more violence why isn’t there a meeting of religious leaders?”

Does he have a point?  Unfortunately, maybe so … at least in some circles.  But, the cases are always cited that prove the point that’s trying to be made, right?  And, on other statements, it does tend to be based on your perspective or spin.

Christians are certainly opposed to homosexual behavior.  They are likewise opposed to all sexual activity outside of marriage.  Does that equate to intolerance and hate in religion?  Well, I’m biased in saying “no”.  Elton John, and others who share his opinion are biased in saying “yes”.

What there needs to be is understanding.  Honestly, we believe we are doing what is best in speaking about the truths on these issues.  Unfortunately for both sides, there is not a forum that best allows for the proper in-depth dialogue to take place.

We believe what we are doing is being done in love for those whom we believe have their eternal soul in jeopardy.  We need to speak in love, we need to act in love, and we need to foster understanding through relationships - instead of sound-bites.

Dialogues must focus around beliefs in God, beliefs in Christ Jesus, in the Scriptures, in what is best for society, and only then specifically on homosexuality.  Without some of the prerequisites, the logical reply would come “That is merely your belief, not mine”.  And it is that which we must deal with.
