Expression of Faith jeopordized grad’s diploma

I just came across this article about a Colorado high school valedictorian who’s diploman was withheld because she spoke about her faith in Jesus Christ. She was forced to issue an apology for her statements, and state that the faculty and staff of the school was not aware that she was going to make such statements.

I tend to find the entire situation preposterous. As valedictorian, she has earned the right to speak to the crowd and class from her heart, whatever that should be, so long as it does not put the safety of others in jeopardy. When a person gives the address, it is their insight and wisdom that they wish to share with the class and those present.

It would be better for schools to realize this, release themselves from responsibility, and not pre-approve their comments.

  1. This is outrageous! Not surprising, but outrageous.

I wonder if the school would have reacted this way had she been Muslim and talked about her faith in Allah. My guess is “no.”
