Why is this Friday called “Good”?
In the day that Jesus was handed over to be put to death, those around Him would never have called this day “good”. For Jesus was betrayed by his friend, abandoned by his followers, and delivered to the Romans to be put to death … death on a cross.
We call Jesus our Lord and Savior. So, why do we call the day that he was put to death — in the manner of a criminal, though he was without sin, having done no wrong — “good”?
We call this day “Good Friday” because Jesus death on that cross ultimately paid the price for our sins, that we might be ransomed from our otherwise eternal fate of being separated from God.
On Sunday morning, He will conquer death, showing He has dominion over it. Demonstrating that power to raise Himself, He relates to us the fact that He can raise us to new life as well. What a great and glorious hope we have in Him.
Indeed it is Good!
