Checking in …

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything new … but I figured I’d pop in and let folks know what I’ve been up to.

I’ve been very busy dealing with the row over the “Gay Games” rowing event coming to a town near me. An editorial letter I wrote was published in the local paper this past Sunday (see below for the text of that letter). The position of the paper is that those who are opposed to the “Gay Games” are “bigots” (Note: the paper actually used this word more than once). I am also in the process of writing an email to the editor and assistant editor regarding the hostility they are showing toward those opposed to homosexuality.

So, that’s where I’ve been (besides trying to keep up with my application development work) … keeping up with that story … getting more information … and responding to the ” reporting” that the paper is doing. In the meantime, here’s the text of the letter:

I am disappointed that the Northwest Herald has decided to buy into the divisiveness that the Gay Games purposefully seeks to encourage.

In its descent into name-calling, last Sunday’s “Our View” demonstrated precisely the reason why this event is bad for Crystal Lake. It might allow athletes to compete, regardless of skill level, age or sexual orientation, but such “inclusion” under the heading Gay Games is a contradiction.

Its billing as “inclusive” appears merely to be an attempt to ward off critics: If everyone were included, only “bigots,” as the Northwest Herald refers to them, would be opposed.

With the report in Tuesday’s paper that the “games” will bring only about 125 to 150 people to Crystal Lake, it seems needless to create a divide in the community by bringing it here.

Obviously, it will mean little to Crystal Lake’s economy.

Because many in the community are opposed, Crystal Lake would do well to reject the bid to host the event. The Northwest Herald would do well to try to understand the good reasons why people believe as they do, and stop the name-calling.
