Bigger and Better Gifts

This past weekend, the final weekend before , was touted to be the busiest shopping weekend of the year as people rush around to complete their Christmas gift purchases. Having been one of those shoppers late Saturday evening, as the mall’s “anchor” stores were open until midnight, I witnessed this first-hand. As I had only a couple items to purchase, I was able to take some time and observe several people around me. As I looked at them rushing about from store to store, a few analytic thoughts crossed my mind, as I noticed some with large boxes or several boxes:

When we, or perhaps our own children, were younger, we were in awe of the simplest of gifts that we received for Christmas. At some point, perhaps the overwhelming excitement at the gifts we received began to wane. As we grew, so it seemed did the gifts, in hopes that we would rediscover that excitement. There came a time, when the size and extravagance of the gifts could grow no more because the gift givers in our lives did not have the means. (In some families, this time may have come after racking up credit card debt that took several months to pay down.) And, soon thereafter started our search for the lost “Christmas Spirit” ….

(to be continued tomorrow, and over the next several days, leading up to Christmas.)
