With all the good values it shows girls, can we overlook this?
LifeNews.com: American Girl Defends Partnership With Pro-Abortion Girls’ Group
American Girl has been a favorite for a number of years, because of the wholesome images and good values that are typically represented in the characters. And, there is education in history in the stories.
But, I think there should be no mistake that what is being promoted by American Girl’s affiliation with a group that supports abortion, along with the messages on the website that defend abortion and the decision of Roe v Wade, severely tarnishes that. Instead of saying, in effect, that girls should be able to make their own choices, they should be looking at the whole picture - such as the Effects of Abortion, and the harm that it can have on the lives of women. (That some women say that they haven’t been harmed shouldn’t remove the fact that any women who is considering abortion should not dismiss the potential affects as, “that won’t happen to me”. After it does, it’s too late.)
All this is not to dismiss the moral and ethical issues involved in abortion - in one entrusted by God to be a caretaker of the life He has created in her.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church has the following to say (in part):
CCC 2322 From its conception, the child has the right to life. Direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, is a “criminal” practice (GS 27 § 3), gravely contrary to the moral law. The Church imposes the canonical penalty of excommunication for this crime against human life.
CCC 2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:
- You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.
God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.
Abortion simply is not compatible with being pro-woman, and American Girl needs to realize that and distance themselves from this other company.
