Mark Shea Dictionary Entry: “Eupocrisy”
Eupocrisy: “the strange talent some humans have for being untrue to their worst words (as distinct from hypocrisy, which is the sad talent we have for being untrue to our best words).”
I always like to read Mark Shea’s column on Catholic Exchange. It’s always interesting and informative and fun; something that I desire for CatholicSphere to be. In his latest entry, Apollos, Priscilla, Aquila and the Glory of Eupocrisy, Mark speaks about how common causes, such as battling against the Culture of Death, has led to some “cross-fertilization” of beliefs between Catholics and Evangelicals … to the extent that, while the language may differ, the underlying belief is virtually the same.
Eupocrisy is found where, for instance, Evangelicals rail against the Catholic teaching, or support something opposed in Catholic teaching, only to turn around in their explanation to support the Catholic belief. Mark warns that we must take care to hear what people actually are saying in their explanations, even when they use familiar terms such as “faith alone”.
